The Rhône is divided into two radically distinct zones. To the north, from Vienne to Valence, Syrah grows on steep granite terraces, producing the most austere and age-worthy expressions of the variety: Côte-Rôtie (with possible co-fermentation of Viognier), Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Cornas. Viognier, found in its purest form in Condrieu, produces whites with exuberant aromas — apricot, peach, white flowers — with an unctuous texture and high alcohol.
To the south, the influence of the Mediterranean and the Mistral create a warmer, drier climate over soils of galets roulés (Châteauneuf-du-Pape), clay-limestone (Gigondas) and sand. Blends based on Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre (GSM) dominate; Châteauneuf-du-Pape may be made from up to 18 different varieties. Whites — Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette — are expressive but represent a minority of total production.
