Learn more about Barolo

The DOCG Barolo covers the Langhe hills of Piemonte across eleven municipalities south of Alba. Soils define two distinct styles: those of Tortonian origin — more clay-rich, with higher magnesium and iron content — in Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto produce wines of greater tannin and ageing potential; the Helvetian soils — paler, more friable and calcareous — in La Morra and Barolo yield more aromatic wines that are approachable earlier.

Nebbiolo is the only permitted variety. It produces wines of garnet colour with an orange rim even in youth, high acidity, powerful tannin in the early years and a complex bouquet in maturity: faded roses, tar, leather, truffle and sour cherry. The regulations require a minimum of 38 months of ageing (62 for Riserva), of which at least 18 must be in wood. The Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGA) articulate a system of individual vineyards equivalent to the Burgundian premiers crus.
