Carlo Revello & Figli
We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.
Giovanni Revello arrived in L'Annunziata, in La Morra, in 1945. In 1954 the family rented a farmhouse owned by the Parish of San Martino, and the following year Giovanni and his sons began replanting the vineyards. Their first own bottle waited until 1967, an exceptional vintage in which they decided to vinify part of the harvest and bottle it as "Giovanni Revello & Figli". The first land they owned outright, in the Gattera cru, came only in 1971.
In 1990 the brothers Lorenzo and Carlo took over, and in 1992 the figure who would shape the house style stepped in: Elio Altare, the man who rewrote modern Barolo, mentored them and changed the way they worked. That is where the horizontal rotary fermenters and the French barriques they still use come from.
The current estate was born of a break. In 2016 the brothers divided the family holdings and Carlo Revello & Figli came into being. The split had a concrete consequence in the glass: the R.G. cuvée, made only between 2013 and 2016 in barely 333 cases, was discontinued that same year.
Carlo works today with his eldest son Erik, trained at the Alba School of Oenology, from a new cellar in the hamlet of Santa Maria. Seven hectares split between Rocche dell'Annunziata, Giachini, Conca and Gattera, plus Bricco Manescotto and Boiolo since 2011, on Tortonian Sant'Agata fossil marls: silty, clayey and calcareous. Rocche dell'Annunziata has been documented as vineyard land since the year 1200.
The movement of recent years runs against what they were taught: each season they replace barriques with large Slavonian oak casks.
