The autonomous community groups the largest wine surface area under denominación de origen in Spain, with DOs as stylistically diverse as Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro, Bierzo, Cigales, Arlanza, and Tierra del Vino de Zamora. The northern meseta, at altitudes of 700 to 1,000 metres, imposes a common climatic denominator: short, intense summers, prolonged winters, and scarce rainfall.
Outside the major DOs, the region hosts emerging viticulture under the IGP Castilla y León, which covers varieties and zones outside the umbrella of the established denominations. The diversity of soils—sands, clays, limestones, and slates depending on the zone—and of indigenous varieties—Tinto Fino, Juan García, Rufete, Verdejo, Malvasía—makes this community the territory of greatest plurality in inland Spanish viticulture.
