Hacienda Monasterio

Hacienda Monasterio began in 1990, when the Dane Peter Sisseck, trained in Bordeaux, arrived in Ribera del Duero to plant the vineyards and run the winery. Carlos de la Fuente joined in 1992 as winemaker. In 1995 Sisseck founded Dominio de Pingus without leaving the estate.

The building went up in 1991 and 1992, designed by the French architect Philippe Mazières, who had worked for Château Margaux and Château d'Yquem. At the end of the 19th century the estate belonged to the Lecanda family, pioneers of wine in the area.

The estate covers 167 hectares, 108 of them vines, between Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero, on Ribera del Duero's so-called golden mile. The slopes face south, at about 750 metres, on limestone-clay soils, with around 4,000 vines per hectare and certified organic viticulture. The main variety is Tinto Fino, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.

They ferment with native yeasts in stainless steel and carry out malolactic fermentation in barrel. The house has three ranges: Crianza, Reserva and Reserva Especial. The Reserva 2019 is 80% Tinto Fino, with 20 months in French Allier oak; the Crianza 2021, 80% Tinto Fino, with 16 to 18 months.
