Learn more about Germany

With thirteen official wine regions (Anbaugebiete), Germany produces some of the world's most age-worthy whites. The Mosel and its tributaries the Saar and Ruwer, the Rheingau, the Nahe and the Pfalz account for the majority of quality production; Baden, in the far south, is the warmest and favours more robust styles.

The Prädikat system classifies wines by the Oechsle reading of the grapes at harvest: from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese. The debate between trocken (dry) and sweet styles is defining: dry wines dominate the domestic market today, while off-dry and botrytised styles remain the most internationally recognised expression.

The growers' association VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) has introduced its own vineyard classification system — Gutswein, Ortswein, Erste Lage and Grosses Gewächs — which complements and in many cases surpasses the official Prädikat in practical relevance, particularly for high-expression dry wines.
