The Langhe DOC is Piedmont's umbrella denomination covering wines produced in the same territory as Barolo and Barbaresco but under less restrictive regulations: it admits Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and other varieties, both as single varietals and in blends. It has been the legal framework that producers such as Gaja have used to make blended wines or wines from varieties not permitted in their reference DOCG appellations.

Langhe Nebbiolo is a particularly significant category: it allows Nebbiolo from the same vineyards as Barolo and Barbaresco to be marketed with lower ageing requirements (12 months versus the 38 required for Barolo), providing earlier access to the varietal at a lower price. The galestro and clay soils of the Langhe give the Nebbiolo the same acidity and tannin profile as in the great DOCG appellations, the difference lying in the depth of expression that the finest single-vineyard sites provide.
