The southernmost of all Alsace's Grand Crus, perched on dramatically steep terraces above the town of Thann, this site stands apart from every other in the region by virtue of its volcanic soils — a unique combination of basalt and schist formed by ancient lava flows. These dark, heat-absorbing soils produce wines of unusual power, richness, and complexity from all three permitted varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.

The reference producer is unquestionably Zind-Humbrecht, whose Rangen wines — particularly the Clos Saint-Urbain — are among Alsace's most complex and age-worthy expressions. The volcanic character manifests as a distinctive smoky, mineral depth that overlays the fruit and persists through decades of ageing, setting these wines apart from any other Alsace terroir.
