The 40 climats of the Chablis Premiers Crus are grouped under 17 official names that may appear on the label. Montée de Tonnerre and Montée de Milieu (south-facing, maximum ripeness) are the most prized references; Forêts and Vaillons offer a fresher, more nervous profile; Butteaux and Côte de Léchet tend to show more pronounced minerality due to greater clay exposure.

The Premiers Crus are situated on slopes that extend the aspect of the Grand Cru or on hills on the left bank, on the same Kimmeridgian soils. They represent the balance between the mineral purity of a Chablis village and the concentration and depth of the Grand Cru, with an ageing potential of 5 to 15 years in good vintages.
