The denomination lies in the far west of Zamora province, between the Duero and Guareña rivers, at altitudes of 620 to 750 metres. The continental climate is among the most extreme in Castilla y León: rainfall below 350 mm, very hot summers and high sunshine hours that produce early, intense ripening. The sandy-silt soils over gravel, with their loose texture, allowed the vineyard to survive phylloxera without grafting.

Tinta de Toro, a local clone of Tempranillo adapted to the extreme conditions of the zone, produces wines of very deep colour, high extract, powerful tannin and high alcohol levels. The denomination's style has evolved from the heavily extracted reds of the nineteen-nineties towards more balanced expressions, without losing the dense structure that distinguishes Toro from the rest of the Castilian denominations.
