At the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, Santenay produces Pinot Noir reds on limestone and clay soils with a more robust profile than Volnay or Pommard: red and black fruits, spice, earthy notes and a tannic structure that requires a few years in bottle. Clos de Tavannes and La Comme are its most highly regarded Premiers Crus.

Santenay has historically been one of the most price-accessible villages on the Côte, making it an excellent option for discovering Burgundian Pinot Noir without the outlay demanded by Chambolle or Vosne-Romanée. The village is also known for its saline mineral springs, which have generated a local spa culture uncommon in the region.
