Learn more about Jumilla

The appellation is located in the northwest of the Region of Murcia and the southwest of Castilla-La Mancha, on an arid plateau at 700–800 metres with annual rainfall below 300 mm and very hot summers. The soils of brown clay, limestone, and gypsum, with a loose texture, preserved own-rooted vines in many parcels thanks to their phylloxera resistance.

Monastrell is the dominant variety and the identity of Jumilla: reds of very deep colour, high dry extract, ripe tannins, and aromas of black fruit, spices, and leather in aged wines. Alcohol levels are habitually high. The current trend among leading wineries is harvesting at low yields and ageing in larger-volume vessels to preserve fruit and reduce tannin extraction.
