The appellation covers two zones of very different profile: the coastal and inland Mediterranean area of the province, with a dry, hot climate and red clay and limestone soils, and the subzone of the Marina Alta in the north of the province, with a more pronounced Atlantic influence and soils that produce wines of a clearly distinct profile.

Monastrell dominates in the main zone, with reds of high concentration, ripe tannins, and ripe black fruit. The Marina Alta is the territory of Moscatel de Alejandría and higher-acidity white varieties. The appellation also covers Fondillón, an oxidative wine produced exclusively from over-ripened Monastrell without added alcohol, with an ageing system analogous to Jerez and a documented history dating back to the 16th century.
