The appellation is located north of Valladolid, on the right bank of the Pisuerga, at altitudes of 700 to 800 metres. Historically known for its rosados, Cigales has redirected part of its production towards age-worthy reds in recent decades. Soils combine sands, silts, and clays with limestone outcrops at higher elevations.

Tinto Fino and Garnacha dominate in reds; Verdejo and Viura in whites. Traditional Cigales rosados, made by direct pressing of red varieties with very brief maceration, show pale colour, fresh acidity, and a clean fruity profile that sets them apart from the higher-extraction rosados of southern Spain.
