The DOCG Chianti Classico occupies the historic territory between Florence and Siena, the original Chianti core delimited in 1932 to distinguish it from the peripheral zones. The soils of galestro (friable calcareous schist) and alberese (compact calcareous clay), with vineyards at altitudes of 250 to 650 metres, provide natural acidity and a fresher profile than Chiantis from lower-lying areas.

Sangiovese at a minimum of 80% defines the reds. The internal category system is tripartite: Chianti Classico (minimum 12 months ageing), Riserva (minimum 24 months, of which 3 in bottle), and Gran Selezione (minimum 30 months, from a single vineyard or own parcel selection). Gran Selezione, introduced in 2014, is the only tier that requires a link to a specific vineyard or parcel selection.
