The Protected Geographical Indication covers wines produced in the territory of Castilla y León outside the scope of the established denominaciones de origen, or made with varieties not permitted in those denominations. Its main function is to provide a framework for projects working with foreign varieties—Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir—or with geographic zones lacking the critical mass to establish their own DO.

The IGP has also served as a legal framework for recovering minor indigenous varieties—Rufete, Bruñal, Bastardo—whose cultivation falls outside the regulations of the existing DOs. Quality is heterogeneous: ranging from low-price industrial production to small-producer single-varietals with high terroir expression.
