The denomination is located south of the city of Zamora, in the transition zone between the Zamora plateau and the Duero valley floor, at altitudes of 680 to 750 metres. The climate is extreme continental, with annual rainfall below 400 mm. The sandy-clay soils, well-drained and of low fertility, naturally limit vineyard yields.

Juan García is the reference indigenous red variety, with small bunches, thick skins and a profile of dark fruit with spice. Tempranillo and Malvasía complete the varietal range. Production is small-scale and artisanal, with wines made both unoaked and with brief barrel ageing.
