Stretching over twenty-six communes along the right bank of the northern Rhône, this is one of the most geographically extensive AOCs in the region, producing Syrah on a patchwork of granitic and schistose slopes interspersed with flatter, less prestigious terrain. Quality is consequently variable: hillside sites with true granite deliver wines of real elegance and minerality, while valley-floor fruit can be straightforward.

The whites, made principally from Marsanne with some Roussanne, are often underrated — floral and peachy when young, they develop a distinctive almond and beeswax complexity with age. Discerning selection by producer and, where indicated, specific lieu-dit is key to navigating this sprawling appellation with confidence.
