In the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Volnay produces the silkiest and most perfumed Pinot Noir in all of Bourgogne. The marl and limestone soils on the slope — more clay-rich at the base, more calcareous at the summit — determine the character of the wine: red flowers, raspberry, violet and a fine, enveloping tannic texture that distinguishes Volnay from the greater density of a Pommard or the power of a Gevrey-Chambertin.

The most emblematic Premiers Crus are Cailleret (pure limestone, maximum elegance), Champans (greater breadth and concentration) and Clos des Chênes (robustness and longevity). The village shares some boundary plots with Meursault, with Volnay Santenots — grown within Meursault's boundaries but vinified as red — a historical curiosity recognised within the appellation itself.
