Maison Patriarche, founded in Beaune in 1780 and one of Burgundy's oldest négociant houses, selects wines from growers across the region, ageing and storing them within five kilometres of vaulted cellars beneath a 17th-century former convent. Volnay is the Côte de Beaune appellation most celebrated for elegance and finesse in Pinot Noir: east- and south-east-facing mid-slope vineyards on limestone and clay soils yield wines of medium body with silky, fine-grained tannins, bright red fruit — cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry — and a delicate floral lift, making it the stylistic antithesis of neighbouring Pommard and closer in character to Chambolle-Musigny on the Côte de Nuits.

The 2017 vintage opened with April frosts that struck low-lying Bourgogne-level sites hardest, while mid-slope Volnay vineyards were largely unaffected; the warm, dry season that followed brought an early, healthy harvest entirely free of botrytis. The result is a clean, direct village Volnay with vivid red fruit, fresh acidity, and the characteristic lightness and charm that define the appellation — approachable now, yet true to its terroir.
