The DOCG Barbaresco, adjacent to Barolo to the south of Alba, produces Nebbiolo wines on Tortonian soils in the hills of Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio. The slightly lower altitude and greater influence of the Tanaro river create a marginally warmer microclimate that allows earlier ripening of Nebbiolo.

The result is a wine with Nebbiolo's varietal hallmarks — high acidity, firm tannin, aromas of roses and tar — but generally of greater elegance and more approachable earlier than Barolo. The regulations require 26 months of ageing (50 for Riserva), with a minimum of 9 in wood. More than one hundred Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGA) are recognised; the most highly regarded are Rabajà, Asili, Santo Stefano and Gallina.
