The appellation is located on the southern foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, in the province of Ávila, at altitudes of 700 to 1,200 metres on granite and granitic sand soils of low fertility. The climate combines the Atlantic influence of the mountain range with the continental rigour of the meseta, producing pronounced thermal gradients that extend the ripening period.
Garnacha is the dominant variety, in many cases with centenary bush-trained, own-rooted vines that survived phylloxera thanks to the sandy soils. The wines show moderate colour, high acidity for the variety, fine-grained tannins, and the characteristic mineral, spiced profile of Gredos granite. The DO brings together small producers who led the reappraisal of altitude viticulture in the sierra of Ávila.
