Learn more about Castile-La Mancha

The world's largest wine-producing region by surface area, with over 400,000 hectares of vineyard on the La Mancha plateau at 600 to 700 metres altitude. The continental Mediterranean climate of extremes—very hot summers, cold winters, rainfall below 400 mm—and the red clay and sandy limestone soils define a terroir that produces grapes of rapid ripening and high concentration.

Airén, a white variety, was for decades the most planted in the world by surface area. Cencibel (Tempranillo) dominates in reds. The region encompasses DOs such as La Mancha, Valdepeñas, Manchuela, Almansa, Uclés, and Méntrida, with differentiated profiles within a shared climatic framework. Rising temperatures over recent decades have pushed some producers towards vineyards at higher elevations.
