Learn more about Valdeorras
The appellation occupies the Sil river valley in inland Galicia (Ourense), some 1,200 hectares on slate and gneiss slopes much like those of Bierzo or the German Mosel. The climate is mountain Mediterranean-continental, warmer and drier than the rest of Galicia: the narrow valleys create their own microclimates, and the slate rock stores the day's heat and gives it back at night.
Godello is the reference variety and Galicia's great age-worthy white: on slate it gives wines of fat but taut texture, pronounced minerality and aromas of russet apple, pear, white peach and beeswax. Aged in barrel or on lees it reaches a near-Burgundian complexity, with a bottle life of up to 10-20 years in the best examples. The appellation's red is Mencía, and the minor whites are Palomino and Lado.
