Vineyards with clay and silica-rich soils. Godello, others.

Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aging on the lees for several months.

The Gaba do Xil O Barreiro 2025 is a distinguished white wine from the prestigious Valdeorras Denomination of Origin in northwest Spain, produced by Telmo Rodríguez’s Compañía de Vinos. Crafted primarily from the indigenous Godello grape, this bottling hails from the specific O Barreiro vineyard, highlighting the unique expression of this site within the broader appellation.

The terroir is defined by clay and slate soils rich in silica. These mineral-rich textures contribute significantly to the wine's longevity and structural balance. The climate blends Atlantic freshness with continental influences, ensuring fruit ripeness while preserving natural acidity. Telmo Rodríguez employs a natural winemaking philosophy, fermenting with indigenous yeasts and aging the wine on its lees for several months. This approach enhances texture and complexity without overpowering the delicate fruit profile. At 12.5% alcohol, it maintains an approachable yet serious presence on the palate.

Expect a vibrant profile marked by intense aromatic purity. Typical notes include white flowers, citrus zest, and ripe stone fruits like peach and apricot, underpinned by a distinct saline minerality. The palate is likely to be crisp yet creamy, thanks to the lees contact, leading to a long, clean finish that showcases the vineyard's identity. It is described as a true "wine of the vineyard," revealing the authentic character of Valdeorras.

While specific critic scores for the 2025 vintage are currently unavailable due to its recent release, Telmo Rodríguez’s Valdeorras whites consistently garner acclaim for their elegance and typicity. This wine represents a classic expression of Galician Godello.

Ultimately, the Gaba do Xil O Barreiro 2025 stands as an elegant, terroir-driven white that balances freshness with structure. It is a compelling choice for those seeking high-quality Spanish whites with aging potential and a distinct sense of place.

Learn more about Telmo Rodríguez

He learned the trade at home, and the other way round. His father, Jaime Rodríguez, bought Remelluri in the late 1960s: an old, abandoned property in the Rioja Alavesa where he set about making wine from scratch. Telmo grew up there.

He met Pablo Eguzkiza while studying in Bordeaux, both of them marked by working with houses such as Pétrus, Cos d'Estournel, Domaine de Trévallon and Chave. In 1994 they made their first wine together — an old-vine Garnacha from Navarra — and out of that came Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez.

What they have done since is hunt for forgotten vineyards and near-extinct varieties across Spain. They hold plots in Rioja, Valdeorras, Cebreros, Ribera del Duero, Málaga, Alicante and Toro, and they have brought back projects that had been lost, such as Molino Real in Málaga or Pegaso in Cebreros.

Lanzaga comes from Lanciego, in the Rioja Alavesa: bush vines farmed organically, between 450 and 650 metres, on shallow limestone, stony and silty soils, with tempranillo, graciano and garnacha. It ferments with native yeasts in concrete vats of 6,500 to 8,500 kilos and ages fourteen months between 1,500-2,500 litre foudres and 225-litre French oak barrels.

Gaba do Xil is their Valdeorras project: godello with other varieties on clay soils rich in silica, fermented with indigenous yeasts and given several months on its lees.
