Protected to the west by the Vosges, Alsace enjoys one of the driest and sunniest climates in France, with warm summers and golden autumns that allow exceptional ripening of aromatic grape varieties. The soils are extraordinarily varied—granite, volcanic (basalt, andesite), slate, sandstone, clay, limestone—which gives the 51 Grands Crus clearly differentiated profiles within the same variety.
The four noble varieties are Riesling (the most respected, mineral and long-lived), Gewurztraminer (rose petals, lychee, oriental spices), Pinot Gris (body, smokiness, honey), and Muscat (the only dry wine in the world with that fresh grape aroma). The Vendanges Tardives (VT) and Sélection de Grains Nobles (SGN) designations define the highest levels of concentration, paralleling the German Spätlese and Beerenauslese system.
