The Mosel flows over Devonian slate on slopes exceeding 60% gradient, concentrating solar heat and draining the soil perfectly. The tributaries Saar and Ruwer contribute differentiated nuances: the Saar produces Rieslings of extreme freshness and vibrant acidity even in cool years; the Ruwer, the smaller of the two, offers wines of an almost mineral delicacy with very fine floral aromas.

The VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer brings together the benchmark producers of the region. Their Grosses Gewächs (GG) come from the finest Lagen — Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Brauneberger Juffer, Scharzhofberg — and represent the highest expression of dry Riesling on slate, with a tension between acidity and extract that allows evolution over decades.
