Montravel is an appellation of the Bergeracois on the right bank of the Dordogne, in the far west of the Périgord. Its dry whites under the AOP Montravel are made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon; the reds follow the structure of South-West blends built on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The sub-appellations Haut-Montravel and Côtes de Montravel produce late-harvest sweet whites, similar in character to Sauternes but with lower international recognition. Clay-over-limestone soils, an oceanic climate, and proximity to the Dordogne define the terroir.
