Named for its dramatically steep, sun-baked slopes above the village of Ampuis, this northern Rhône appellation ranks among the world's great Syrah terroirs. The blend of granite and schist across the two historic hillside areas — the lighter-soiled Côte Blonde and the clay-rich, iron-laced Côte Brune — allows producers to co-ferment up to 20% Viognier with the Syrah, adding a lifted floral note and textural complexity that is uniquely characteristic of the appellation.

The aromatic signature — olive tapenade, smoked bacon, violet, and black pepper — is unlike any other Syrah in the world, elevated by a fine acidity rarely found in southern expressions of the variety. Guigal's La Landonne, La Mouline, and La Turque set the global benchmark, but a wealth of smaller domaines across both côtes offer exceptional quality and terroir transparency.
