Niederösterreich is Austria's largest wine region, encircling Vienna to the north and west. Its most distinguished subregions are Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal — producers of the country's finest dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, from terraces of gneiss and loess that impart a characteristic minerality. The Wachau's own classification — Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd — regulates ripeness and alcohol levels in its top dry whites. The extensive Weinviertel to the northeast is the largest subregion by area, source of fresh, aromatic, everyday-drinking Grüner Veltliner.
