The northwestern edge of Rioja Alavesa, La Sonsierra stretches along the left bank of the Ebro at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, encompassing San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida at altitudes of 450 to 600 metres. Atlantic influence here is stronger and more persistent than in the rest of Rioja Alavesa, producing slower ripening, higher natural acidity, and a firmer tannic structure in its predominantly Tempranillo-based wines.
The clay-limestone soils and cooler microclimate combine to yield wines of genuine concentration and superior ageing potential, with Graciano and Garnacha playing important supporting roles in the finest blends. La Sonsierra is increasingly regarded as one of the most distinctive and intellectually compelling terroirs within Rioja Alavesa.
