The most significant of the Saint-Émilion satellites, this appellation to the north of the main zone shares the same geological foundations of limestone and clay and the same preference for Merlot, often blended with Cabernet Franc, that define the Right Bank style. Without a cru classé system, quality varies, but the best estates consistently rival entry-level Saint-Émilion at considerably more accessible prices.

The wines display the typical Right Bank generosity — soft, ripe tannins, red fruit character, and a rounded texture — and are generally ready to drink within five to eight years of vintage, making them an excellent everyday alternative for lovers of the more celebrated neighbouring appellation.
