The appellation is set in the Sil and Miño river valleys in inland Galicia, where extreme topography requires cultivation on slate terraces with gradients above 50%. The southerly aspect of the slopes and the protection of the valleys create a warmer, drier microclimate than the Galician coast, with cold winters and dry summers that favour complete grape ripening.
The Mencía reds are the benchmark of the appellation: slate, altitude, and very low yields produce wines of medium ruby colour, marked acidity, silky tannins, and great aromatic precision. The whites from Godello and Albariño represent a smaller share of production but are of increasing quality, especially in the Amandi subzone with the highest-altitude vineyards above the Sil.
