Guímaro
We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.
Guímaro was the family's nickname in the village, and in Galician it means rebel. Under that name they bottle in Sanmil, in the municipality of Sober, within the Amandi subzone of Ribeira Sacra.
Manolo and Carmen Rodríguez set up the winery in 1991, when they stopped selling wine in bulk and began bottling it themselves, and joined the appellation in 1996. Their son, Pedro Manuel Rodríguez, has run it since 2001.
The winemaker Raúl Pérez has advised the house since 2002, and with him came native yeasts, whole-cluster work and ageing in large wooden formats.
They farm some 8 hectares of their own plus rented plots, all in Amandi. Mencía leads the reds, with Caíño, Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Mouratón and Garnacha Tintorera; the whites are Godello with Treixadura, Loureiro and Albariño, in the local field-blend tradition. The single-vineyard wines are Meixemán, Capeliños and Pombeiras.
