In Alsace, Pinot Gris achieves a richness and weight that distinguishes it sharply from the leaner Pinot Grigio of northern Italy or the delicate versions produced in Burgundy. The variety here expresses itself in a spectrum from honey, dried apricot, and exotic spice in youth to complex smoky, nutty, and earthy notes with age — a transformation that typically rewards five to fifteen or more years in the bottle.

Grand Cru terroirs amplify this ageing capacity and add mineral depth and definition. The variety is also vinified as Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles, where its naturally high extract and propensity for botrytis produce some of Alsace's most compelling sweet wines.
