Learn more about Saint-Chinian

Straddling the boundary between the Cévennes foothills and the Hérault plain, Saint-Chinian is defined by two geologically distinct zones that produce genuinely contrasting styles within a single AOC. The northern schist sector — including the sub-appellations Berlou and Roquebrun — produces darker, denser, more mineral wines from Grenache and Syrah with the iron-and-earth signature of metamorphic soils. The southern clay-limestone zone yields softer, rounder wines with earlier-drinking character.

Berlou and Roquebrun are recognised within the appellation's hierarchy for their schist terroirs capable of producing structured, age-worthy reds that compete with far more expensive Languedoc AOCs. The diversity of styles within a single designation makes Saint-Chinian one of the region's most rewarding zones for price-to-quality exploration.
