The Vinho Verde denomination occupies the Minho region in the far north-west of Portugal, with an Atlantic climate of high rainfall (more than 1,000 mm annually) and mild temperatures. The vineyard, trained on high pergola systems or on posts, produces grapes of high acidity and moderate alcohol due to the latitude and humidity.

Alvarinho (the same variety as the Galician Albariño) dominates the Monção and Melgaço sub-zone and produces the most complex, full-bodied and expensive Vinho Verdes. Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura and Avesso are the most representative white varieties of the denomination, frequently blended in the higher-volume Vinho Verdes. The reds from Vinhão (Sousão), with very high acidity and deep colour, are a distinctive speciality of the denomination little known outside Portugal.
