Learn more about Priorat

Priorat (DOCa since 2000) occupies a mountainous enclave in the province of Tarragona, between the Sierra del Montsant and the Siurana river. The defining element of the terroir is llicorella: black slate and quartzite of volcanic origin that drains rapidly, forces roots to penetrate several metres in search of moisture and imparts a specific, recognisable minerality to the wine. Slopes of up to 60% and low rainfall — 400 mm annually — limit yields naturally.

Garnacha and Cariñena from old vines on llicorella produce the reference wines: reds of great concentration, fine-grained ripe tannin, moderate acidity and a prolonged mineral finish. The internal classification — Vila, Viló, Gran Vi — seeks to articulate a territorial system from the plot to the village, analogous to Burgundy. Whites from Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo with oak ageing represent a small but growing segment of increasing quality.
