Learn more about Gigondas
Nestled at the foot of the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail in the southern Rhône, this appellation blends the warmth of the Mediterranean with the elevation and airflow of the pre-Alps to produce wines of genuine character and consistency. Blends are built around Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre on clay-limestone soils, with some producers working at higher altitudes that give the wines a freshness and finesse uncommon in the southern Rhône.
Often described as the closest alternative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape without the accompanying price premium, the appellation spans a range of styles from plush and modern-fruity to structured and earthy. Dark fruit, garrigue, and a firm tannin backbone are common threads, with the best examples ageing gracefully over ten to fifteen years.
