Learn more about Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village on the Côte de Nuits by production volume and concentrates the greatest number of Grands Crus: nine in total, with Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze at the head. The soils are a mixture of clay and limestone with an iron presence in the lower zones, giving the Pinot Noir reds an unusual weight and density for Burgundy: black fruits, spice, liquorice and a mineral touch of wet earth.

The appellation also encompasses east-facing Village parcels (more approachable, early-ripening) and numerous Premiers Crus — Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Estournelles Saint-Jacques, Cazetiers, Combe aux Moines — which illustrate the transition between the fruity concentration of the village level and the complexity of the Grands Crus. The longevity of the finest Chambertin (Rousseau, Trapet, Ponsot, Leroy) is legendary: 20 to 40 years in great vintages.
