The denomination occupies the southern Atlantic coast of Galicia, centred on the rías of Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo. The oceanic climate, with annual rainfall of 1,200 to 1,800 mm and mild temperatures, creates a slow-ripening environment. The granitic soils, coarse-sanded and with low water retention, require training on high trellises to improve air circulation and reduce fungal pressure on the vines.

Albariño represents more than 90% of production and has defined the denomination's profile internationally: high acidity, stone fruit and citrus aromas, a texture that, in the finest hillside viticulture, incorporates minerality and persistence. The Val do Salnés sub-zone concentrates the largest planted area and is the historic heartland; O Rosal and Condado do Tea, with greater continental influence, produce fuller-bodied wines with greater aromatic potential.
