Without a formal classification system and producing tiny volumes relative to global demand, this compact Right Bank appellation commands some of the world's highest wine prices on the basis of quality and scarcity alone. The secret lies in the blue clay — known locally as crasse de fer — that underlies the plateau's topsoil, creating conditions in which Merlot achieves a richness, weight, and velvety texture unlike any other terroir in Bordeaux.

Château Pétrus, vinified almost entirely from Merlot on the deepest vein of that distinctive iron-rich clay, and the even tinier Le Pin are the acknowledged icons, but a constellation of smaller estates surrounding them confirms the plateau's exceptional character. Voluptuous dark fruit, mocha, and truffle are the hallmarks; tannins are present but always supple, and the wines evolve magnificently over two to three decades.
