The largest appellation in the northern Rhône by planted area, this AOC forms a broad arc around the celebrated granite hill of Hermitage, encompassing a mosaic of soil types — from the granitic sands of the north to the heavier clay-alluvial plains further south. Syrah dominates the reds, producing styles that are typically more accessible and earlier-drinking than Hermitage itself, though the finest single-vineyard examples challenge this comparison.

Marsanne and Roussanne produce the whites, which can develop remarkable complexity and a distinctive waxy, almond texture with age. The diversity of soils and producers means quality varies, but the best Crozes-Hermitage offers excellent value for a northern Rhône Syrah experience, with the characteristic flavour profile of black olive, pepper, and violets at a more accessible price point.
