The largest wine-producing region of France by vineyard area — with more than 220,000 hectares — combines Mediterranean sunshine, northerly winds (Tramontane and Cers) and a diversity of soils unparalleled in the country. Under the broad AOP Languedoc denomination, a wide variety of styles are grouped: from Picpoul de Pinet (a high-acidity white beside the Thau lagoon) to the high-altitude reds of the Terrasses du Larzac, via the elegance of La Clape and the power of Minervois and Corbières.

GSM blends (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) form the backbone of the reds, with a growing presence of old Carignan that gives notable structure and tannins when vinified by carbonic maceration. The IGP Pays d'Oc is the denomination for widely consumed varietal wines, with millions of bottles exported. The Roussillon also concentrates the finest vins doux naturels — Maury, Banyuls, Rivesaltes — made from Grenache with mutage during fermentation.
