Castelmaure is a cooperative, founded in 1921 in Embres-et-Castelmaure, a small village set in the Corbières, in the old Cathar lands. It is made up of around forty growers.
Since 1985 almost all of its production has been bottled under the Corbières appellation.
The striking part is how they work the vineyard: without machines. All the fruit is picked by hand and carried in baskets. In a cooperative, where volume usually pushes in the opposite direction, that decision costs wages and time at every harvest.
The house also cultivates a reputation for being independent and irreverent, one it claims for itself, and it shows in how it presents its wines.
