The denomination surrounds the Montsant massif and acts as a geographical crown to the Priorat, sharing soil and climate characteristics but with a lower presence of pure llicorella. The granite, limestone and clay soils combined with schist produce wines of similar structure to Priorat but of slightly lower concentration, which translates into a quality-to-price ratio frequently cited as a benchmark on the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

Garnacha and Cariñena dominate the reds; Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo the whites. The denomination is home to producers applying the same principles of heroic viticulture as in Priorat — low yields, old vines, minimal cellar intervention — whose wines offer access to Mediterranean schist-based reds at a significantly more accessible price.
