The Douro denomination covers the still wines produced in the same territory as Porto, the Douro valley from the Spanish border to Régua. The schist and shale soils of the Douro Superior and Cima Corgo, on steep slopes worked in socalcos (terraces), produce grapes of high concentration with acidity preserved by the cool nights at altitude.

The red varieties are the same as those used for Porto: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão dominate the blends. The Douro's still wines have gained international recognition as age-worthy reds of high expression, with tannic structure, concentrated fruit and a potential for development in bottle of ten to twenty years in the finest vintages.
