No territory in the world produces Riesling with the ethereal lightness of the Mosel: alcohol levels of 7 to 9% abv with a brilliant tartaric acidity that sustains the wine for decades without the weight of alcohol deforming it. The young aromatic profile shows white peach, lime and white flowers; with ageing, the characteristic petrol note (Riesling petrol) emerges, a marker of maturity highly prized by collectors.

The VDP vineyard hierarchy organises wines around Lagen (individual vineyards): the Grosse Lagen produce both the traditional Spätlese and Auslese and the dry Grosses Gewächs, which display the full mineral complexity of Devonian blue slate. The expression of each plot — Sonnenuhr in Wehlen, Würzgarten in Ürzig, Alte Reben in the Saar — is sufficiently distinct to speak of terroirs with their own identity.
