Piesporter Goldtröpfchen is a VDP.GROSSE LAGE — the Grand Cru equivalent of the Mosel — where Stefan Steinmetz, fourth generation of this 14-hectare Middle Mosel estate and VDP member, cultivates Riesling on steep south-facing slopes of 30–70% gradient, between 120–200m altitude, over deep Devonian blue slate. Every grape is hand-harvested and individually sorted.

The Goldkapsel designation marks a superior Auslese selection: higher must weight and greater noble rot concentration. Spontaneous fermentation with no commercial yeasts or additives. The 2018 vintage was the Mosel's warmest since 2003. Production is extremely limited.

Picked at 114° Oechsle and with partly raisined (but healthy) grapes, the 2018 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese (Gold Capsule) is lemon-fresh and coolish on the pure, elegant, slightly flinty nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, with precise, linear acidity cutting through the sweet, lush fruit, this is an elegant and refined Auslese with a long, salty-piquant finish. Still nervous (or nervy), this is a promising and digestible Riesling with lush stone fruit flavors on the aromatic finish. Very long and stimulating though still pretty sweet (121 grams of residual sugar). Bottled in late February 2019; tasted in March 2019.

The house sits in Brauneberg, in the Middle Mosel, and is more than a hundred and twenty years old. The first to break with custom was Stefan Steinmetz's grandfather: he was among the first in the village to bottle under his own name rather than sell the wine in bulk.

His father, Günther, took over in 1958 and was the one who built the reputation for quality the estate has today. Stefan, the fourth generation, came in as cellar and vineyard manager in 2000, aged twenty-two.

There are some thirteen hectares, widely scattered: they stretch across about twenty kilometres in order to sit in the sites that matter —Brauneberger Juffer, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Dhroner Hofberg, Mülheimer Sonnenlay, Kestener Paulinshofberg— all of them classified as Grosse Lage.

What they call natural viticulture is concrete: no fertilisers, no herbicides and no insecticides, with yield control and hand harvesting and sorting. And a declared preference when buying parcels: old, ungrafted Riesling.
