The Loire River (over 1,000 km of vineyards) encompasses four major stylistic zones. At the mouth, Muscadet produces dry whites from Melon de Bourgogne with sur lie ageing that adds texture and complexity. Further inland, Anjou-Saumur produces the great Chenin Blanc wines—from dry Savennières to the sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon—and the fresh Cabernet Franc reds of Saumur-Champigny.

In Touraine, Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire express Chenin Blanc across all registers (sec, demi-sec, moelleux, pétillant, effervescent), while Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil yield the silkiest Cabernet Franc wines of the Loire. In the Centre, the flint and Kimmeridgian soils of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé produce world-benchmark Sauvignon Blanc: citrus-driven, mineral, with the gunflint smoky notes that gave the latter its name.
